lOnly the outside of these piercings need cleaning as the inside gets washed with saliva. Licking carefully behind the back plate of the stud can help remove any food debris that might get caught there. Rinsing is generally fairly ineffectual for this.

lTo clean the outside clean four times a day with a cotton bud and salty water.

lRemove all crust before attempting to turn the jewellery.

lDiluted listerene mouthwash (1 part listerine to 5 parts water) or salty water can be used to help with general mouth hygiene if desired.

lSometimes the skin on the inside tries to grow up around the back plate and this is easily overcome by pushing it back with the tongue or finger. Applying a small amount of bongela can also be helpful if this occurs.
